While on patrol in the early morning hours of July 16, 1985, uniformed
officer Tim Whittington and a fellow officer responded to a first degree burglary call at
1009 Tennyson Drive. The subject had robbed an elderly couple and stabbed the elderly
man in the chest, arm, and hand, taking a pistol from the home as he fled.
An hour later, when Officer Whittington stopped to question a subject fitting the
assailant's description, he was fatally shot. The subject was apprehended shortly
thereafter and sentenced to 150 years of imprisonment.
Over 50 law enforcement agencies sent representatives to the 26 year old officer's
memorial and funeral services.
In memory of her husband, Cindy Whittington, a former Charlotte police officer,
graciously donated money for 34 bullet-proof vests for Charlotte police and reserve
officers.
