Robert L. Smith

In the early hours of Thursday, January 15, 1987, Adam Three Officers responded to a call for service regarding a subject shooting into a condominium complex on Spyglass Place. When they arrived at the scene, the officers attempted to locate the subject firing the shots. During the manhunt, Officer Robert L. Smith was shot fatally. This 7 year veteran of the Charlotte Police Department was 27 years old at the time of his death. A subject was subsequently arrested for Officer Smith's murder.

Approximately 800 people attended the memorial service and 1,000 were present for the funeral services. To honor Officer Smith's memory, the wives of Adam-3 officers and other officer's wives tied yellow ribbons to every utility pole from the church to the cemetery.
