Sergeant Robinson was born in Davidson in 1925. He attended schools there
until 1943, when he joined the Navy at age 17. He joined the Mecklenburg County Police
force in January, 1948. On May 4, 1970 around 8 p.m., Sergeant Robinson led six
other county officers and two Highway Patrol officers to Mcllwaine Road to serve a warrant
stemming from an incident that occurred earlier in the day.
After trying to locate the subject in his trailer, the officers began searching the
area around the trailer. Sergeant Robinson was ambushed and mortally wounded with a high
power rifle shot from a wooded area. His assailant was critically injured in the exchange
of gunfire.
Sergeant Robinson, 44 years old, had been on the force long enough for everyone to know
and respect him and showed it in the large turnout at his funeral.
