A native of Gaston County, Officer C. P. Nichols was on the night squad of
patrolmen in the Charlotte business district during the early morning hours of Sunday,
March 29, 1936, when he was struck down by a hit-and-run driver at Tryon and Third
Streets. He remained unconscious for 19 days, and passed away on April 17 as a result of
his injuries. Sixty years old at the time of his death, Officer Nichols joined the
Charlotte Police Department on January 4, 1926, after having been engaged in the grocery
business.
Members of the Charlotte Police Department served as active and honorary pallbearers at
the funeral services which were conducted at the J. M. Harry Funeral Home at Seventh and
Tryon Streets, and later at the grave site at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
