A native of Gaston County, Officer C. P. Nichols was on the night squad of patrolmen in the Charlotte business district during the early morning hours of Sunday, March 29, 1936, when he was struck down by a hit-and-run driver at Tryon and Third Streets. He remained unconscious for 19 days, and passed away on April 17 as a result of his injuries.

Sixty years old at the time of his death, Officer Nichols joined the Charlotte Police Department on January 4, 1926, after having been engaged in the grocery business.

Members of the Charlotte Police Department served as active and honorary pallbearers at the funeral services which were conducted at the J. M. Harry Funeral Home at Seventh and Tryon Streets, and later at the grave site at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
