A native of County Kildare, Ireland, James "Jimmy" Moran joined
the police force in December 1889. During the early hours of Saturday, April 2, 1892,
Officer Moran and a fellow officer were downtown, when they observed two men carrying
sacks of flour at Seventh and College Streets. They caught the two men a block
away. One man started to run away and the second officer pursued him while Officer Moran
remained with the other subject. The other officer heard two shots and when he turned
around, he saw Officer Moran fall to the ground, and the subject near him flee.
Officer Moran died on Monday, April 4, 1892, at the age of 60 years old, at his home on
Stonewall Street of a gunshot wound to his heart. The Board of Aldermen unanimously
approved to pay the funeral expenses and the mortgage on his home. |
