A 4½ year veteran of the Charlotte
Police Department, Detective Ed Correll, age 40, was shot several times in a house he and
his partner had entered to search for stolen goods. His partner narrowly escaped
death, when a shot grazed his left arm.This fatal event took place at 7:30 p.m. on
January 22, 1929. As a result, a $500 reward was offered by the city for the capture, dead
or alive, of the officer's slayer.
Almost 1,000 people packed the Allen Street Baptist Church for Officer Correll's
funeral, prompting one reporter to rank it as "one of the greatest funeral throngs
ever seen in Charlotte."
Several days later, The Charlotte Observer started a fund for the officer's family and
receipts for the first day of the fund totaled $124. The family's physician, also offered
his services free of charge for the future to the bereaved family.
