John Burnette, 25 years old, along with Andy Nobles were killed Tuesday,
October 5, 1993 when they were responding to what should have been a routine call of a
suspicious vehicle and person at Boulevard Homes Housing Complex.They apprehended the
suspect, Alden Jerome Harden, 33, who ran into a nearby wooded area. The two officers gave
chase and each was shot in the head by Harden.
It was the first time two officers were killed in a single incident and the very
streets where they lost their lives have been named after them.
In the wake of their deaths, the Charlotte Hornets basketball team, pledged to finance
the careers of 2 additional Charlotte Mecklenburg officers, a first in the annals of pro
sports.
