In the late evening hours of May 21, 1960, Officer J. R. Annas and another
officer were attempting to break up a street fight between two men at the corner of South
Church Street and West Summit Avenue, amid a crowd of more than 100 spectators.
While Officer Annas went back to the patrol car to call for assistance, the other officer
was assaulted by members of the crowd, and his pistol taken from him. As Officer Annas
was returning to the scene to assist the officer, he was shot six times by the subject who
had the officer's pistol, and was mortally wounded.
This launched the "greatest manhunt in the history of the city" for the
slayer.
Born in Statesville, Officer Annas, 25 years old, had been on the police force since
1958. The Charlotte Observer started a fund for Officer Annas' family. |
